Under-five mortality is the likelihood that a child born in a particular year or period will die before the age of
five, according to the age-specific mortality rates for that period. Globally, the under-five mortality rate has
declined from 12.7 million in 1990 to 5 million in 2021, and studies have shown that health practitioners,
especially nurses, are instrumental in reducing these premature deaths. However, despite worldwide trends
toward declining child mortality, the under-five mortality rate continues to be high in some parts of Africa
and Asia.
The aim of this study was to identify the various roles nurses play in reducing mortality in children underfive years of age. The purpose was to provide information and training that nurses can use to reduce or
prevent mortality rate among children between the ages of 0-5 years.
The study was conducted as a literature review using the databases CINAHL and PubMed. Eleven articles
were chosen to be reviewed; content analysis was applied in the data analysis.
Three categories were generated: Education, nursing interventions, and healthcare services. The review
demonstrated the importance of nurses’ education and sustaining interventions that helped to reduce the child
mortality rate. The result also indicated the need for further studies in reviewing and updating the specialized
roles played by nurses in reducing death among under-five children.
