Tiivistelmä
Tämän toiminnallisen opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli kehittää maatilayrittäjille uusia ansaintamahdollisuuksia biohiilituotannon kautta. Tuotoksia hyödynnettiin työn toimeksiantajan, HAMK Bio -tutkimusyksikön, osatoteuttamissa KieMaRa- ja Lyckan-hankkeissa. Työssä tehtiin teknis-taloudellista tarkastelua maatilan biohiilituotannolle. Tarkasteluun sisältyi maatilan biohiilituotannon konseptointia ja kannattavuuden laskentaa. Lisäksi opinnäytetyön tietoperustaosion pohjalta tuotettiin KieMaRa-hankkeelle materiaalia.
Biohiilen valmistukseen soveltuvia pienemmän mittakaavan pyrolyysilaitteistoja on viime vuosina tullut markkinoille. Kannattavuuslaskentaan valittiin maatilojen käyttöön kehitetty jatkuvatoiminen pyrolyysilaitteisto. Laitteisto on suunniteltu yhdistettyyn biohiilen ja lämpöenergian tuotantoon.
Työssä tarkasteltiin maatiloilla muodostuvien sivuvirtojen soveltuvuutta biohiilen raaka-aineeksi. Metsänhoidon sivuvirroista tuotettu hake oli sopivin raaka-aine maatilan jatkuvaan biohiilituotantoon. Hakkeeseen voidaan sekoittaa muita maatilalla muodostuvia sivuvirtoja, kuten olkea, viljan esipuhdistusjätettä tai pilaantunutta rehua. Sivuvirroille hahmoteltiin pyrolyysiin perustuva, lisäarvoa tuottava arvoketju.
The purpose of this functional thesis was to develop new earning opportunities for farmers through biochar production. The commissioner of the thesis was HAMK Bio Research Unit. The outputs of the thesis were utilized in the KieMaRa and Lyckan projects partially carried out by the commissioner. A techno-economic analysis was carried out for the farm-scale biochar production. The review included conceptualizing a farm-scale biochar production and calculating its profitability. In addition, based on the theory section of the thesis, biochar-related material was produced for the KieMaRa project.
In recent years, smaller-scale pyrolysis plants suitable for farms have entered the market. For the profitability calculation, continuous pyrolysis system developed for farm use was chosen. The equipment is designed for the combined production of biochar and thermal energy.
The suitability of farm side streams as pyrolysis feedstock were examined. Wood chips produced from forestry side streams were the most suitable feedstock for the continuous farm-scale biochar production. Other side streams generated on the farm, such as straw, grain pre-cleaning waste or spoiled feed, can be mixed with wood chips. A value chain for these feedstocks was sketched. The farm can use biochar in its own operations or sell the biochar onwards. Biochar farm applications include soil improvement and adding biochar to manure or bedding. Biochar is a permanent carbon storage, so in addition to biochar and heat, a farm can generate income by selling carbon credits on the voluntary emission compensation market.
In the thesis, profitability calculations were carried out for two farms using the payback method. The calculations showed that the farm can produce biochar profitably, if the production is combined with heat production, and the farm's heat demand is close to the maximum operating capacity of the pyrolysis equipment. Selling carbon credits did not alone make biochar production profitable at current prices. The results of the thesis were utilized in the techno-economic analysis of the biochar production in the KieMaRa and Lyckan projects. In conclusion, the concept of farm-scale biochar production will be further developed in these projects. A farm entrepreneur considering the biochar production could also benefit from the information gathered in the theoretical part of the thesis and the practical example calculations.
