Tiivistelmä
As the speed of new fashion trends coming and going is at an all-time high the way we consume has changed. In order to keep up with the trends companies are creating new clothing at a faster rate and for a smaller cost, as a result the quality and longevity of the clothing is lacking which is why a big percentage ends up in the landfill. Companies adapting the circular business model and reusing the materials instead of throwing them away would alleviate the ecological problem at hand. This study aims to find out what the sustainability challenges of circular economy in the textile industry are and what solutions there are to those challenges. The research question for this study is: What are the challenges of implementing a circular business model in the textile industry? To find the answer to this question a systematic literature review was conducted. 8 different articles published in the last 6 years were chosen to be a part of the study. The results from the systematic literature review indicate that there are significant challenges that companies in the textile industry can encounter when implementing circularity into their operations and processes. The challenges found were categorized in challenges within product design, manufacturing, waste management and recycling, technology for sorting, financial pressures and reverse logistics. The findings of this study showcase the sustainability challenges companies in the textile industry incorporating circularity into their operations can have but also, they provide solutions that can benefit the companies wanting to transform toward a more circular business model.
