This thesis was written to provide an insight on algae as an energy source, its general classification and for providing a basic information on its cultivation, harvesting and production as well as its possible association for wastewater treatment for biofuel and coproducts development. Furthermore, the challenges in viability are discussed and proposals are made for future development.
The theoretical framework is built around algae-based wastewater treatment plants and potential lipid as well as byproduct development, while also including the lifecycle of algal energy production. Also, it primarily focuses on oil conversion process and gives a short insight to recent oil extraction techniques.
This thesis work is mainly based on literature reviews from various sources and the methodology is centered around the theoretical framework and statistical results from those sources.
The main objective was developing necessary knowledge for algae-based municipal wastewater treatment systems, algae-based biofuels, and coproducts. Also, topics like harvesting, oil extraction and oil conversion are explored.
