Tiivistelmä
The research scope was to study the impact of project leadership practices, expert service management practices and knowledge management practices on engineering product delivery projects. The research analyzed the differences between regular business operations in contrary to projects and examined what responsibilities product suppliers, product clients and service providers bear during engineering product deliveries. The research demonstrates how appropriately managed expert services can improve engineering product delivery projects.
The research is based on literature review and on professional interviews. The literature review data is compared with the qualitative findings gathered from one-on-one professional interviews with engineering industry professionals. The empirical real-life experiences are set side by side with the academic findings. Interviews’ intention was to validate the literature findings and improve the credibility of the research. The interview findings were based largely on individual opinions and are not universally verifiable or accurate. An additional limitation effecting the objectivity of the research was the author’s own history from the engineering industry.
The findings from the literature review explain stakeholders’ responsibilities, and what are some of the usual challenges stakeholders face during engineering product delivery projects. The paper explains why outsourced expert services are controversial and how appropriately managed expert services support successful engineering product delivery projects. Professional interviews confirmed most of the literature review findings and the collected data provided new perspectives on project management practices.
The study suggests new project management practices and reveals further research opportunities. Main findings are that instead of one product delivery project, there are three projects, neutral project teams detached from stakeholders’ regular business operations should be managing the projects, and knowledge management is central for successful cooperation between the project participants.
