Tiivistelmä
Opinnäytetyön aiheena on pukusuunnittelu rituaaliseen tanssiteokseen Virtaus.
Asiasanat: pukusuunnittelu, teatteri, rituaali, tanssiteos The objective of this thesis was to design costumes for a play called Virtaus, a ritualistic dance artwork. The goal was to design a visual ensemble for the play that included ritual, different dance genres and music. The premiere of the play was last April 2022 in Helsinki.
The purpose of the thesis was to examine and observe how to design visually imposing and functional costumes. The purpose was that the costumes should also function with other design areas creating a coherent wholeness. Exploring the performers movements and how these affect the design of the costumes was one of the purposes. The target was also to find out what has to be taken into consideration in costume design when a living fire is involved in the performance.
The thesis uses tree different qualitative research methods. Michael J. Gillette’s (1987) theatre design and problem-solving model, which is composed of seven different steps, was used to help the design process. A semi-structured interview was arranged to map out the design collaboration between the costume designer, actors, and director, and to obtain information on how the costumes worked on the play. With observation it was possible to examine the visual ensemble, how colors and costumes worked together and how the process proceeded.
The result of the costume design was a visual ensemble that complemented the other design areas of the play with its lightness and unique choices. The colors of the performer’s costumes were in harmony. The transparency and size of the costumes enabled the performer to finish their movements. The calm and quite simple ensemble created balance for the play. As a result of the thesis observations were made the movements and ritual, how these affect the design process, and the associated challenges that the costume designer may encounter during the process.
