Tiivistelmä
The thesis explored measures to ensure the company’s ability to operate in exceptional circumstances, for example when the office space is not available. The idea of the thesis comes from the experiences of the first wave of the spread of the COVID 19 virus. Employees of the municipal rental housing company X did not have the opportunity to close the office and change their everyday work to remote work, because they were not prepared for it. They did not have processes or even the devices to make it possible.
The thesis follows the transforming journey from a company that did not have a remote working culture and that had relied on printing all data on paper, to a digitally advanced and almost location independent company. The main goal was to develop the company's processes in such a way that information systems and all necessary information are available regardless of location and time.
The research method was design research. The goal was to initiate change in the company’s operations. The data collecting methods were participatory observing, interviews, and documents. The theoretical framework consists of digitalization, a digital transformation model as well as prevalence and pros and cons of remote working.
The first results after developing the processes were promising. Operations became more efficient, key indicators improved and absenteeism decreased. The thesis shows that increasing remote work opportunities and developing information management towards location independence has positive effects on organization’s performance. Company X has good conditions to continue developing processes towards better information management and location independence.
