This thesis aimed at gaining an understanding of how professional ethical guidelines affect the ways social welfare professionals work in a disability setting. The purpose of this thesis was to identify how the ethical views of social welfare professionals affect their everyday work with clients.
The data was collected at a day-activity center for people with intellectual disabilities using semi-structured interviews. A total of four social welfare professionals were interviewed. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis method and the data was coded using values coding. During later stages of analysis coded parts of the transcriptions were translated from Finnish into English to present the data.
The results of the thesis are inconclusive due to the small sample of participants. However, the interview transcripts give an insight into the ways social welfare professionals navigate the ethical considerations of everyday interactions with people with intellectual disabilities. The data implies that the ethical guidelines of disability work are present in the everyday work of these social welfare professionals, especially in situations which include planning activities with their clients. Furthermore, the results suggest that social welfare professionals have an awareness of the importance of ethics to their work and how those codes ethics affect their decision making at work.
