The aim of this thesis was to survey the observations and experiences of both students and the teaching staff regarding the occurrence of learning and concentration difficulties. The objective was also to survey the adequacy of the student welfare support structures in Business College Helsinki vocational school. The aim of the thesis was to identify possible areas for improvement in the provision of school support based on the gathered data. The study was conducted as two separate Webropol online surveys in the spring of 2022. A total of 15 students and 11 teachers responded to the questionnaires.
The study showed that most students receive support mainly from outside the school rather than from the support structures provided by the institution. The experiences of the teachers and students on the adequacy of the support were partly different. The teachers found the quality and quantity of the provided support to be more sufficient than the students who had more varying experiences in both ends of the spectrum. Some teachers even found the support to be completely sufficient for the needs of the students. Concentration difficulties were perceived to have increased more than learning difficulties. Both the students and the teachers experienced the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on studying to be individual, amplifying both negative and positive effects. Neutral effects were also brought up.
The study concluded the most pivotal areas for development to be to provideclearer instructions on the support structure of the educational institution for both the teaching staff and the students, lowering the threshold for seeking support, taking students at risk of not receiving any support into account better, and securing sufficient time resources for the teachers to provide adequate support. It is also essential to consider the need for support as early on as possible to avoid the accumulation of the problems of the students and to sustain their motivation for studying.
