Background
Postpartum depression is one of the most common complications of childbirth. Its consequences are serious, not only causing self-harm to the mother, but also negatively affecting the baby, family, and society. In severe cases, suicide, child abuse, and child killing may even occur. In recent years, the detection rate of postpartum depression varies across the world, but the overall trend is increasing.
Task and objective
The purpose of this study is to find out how do nurses recognize postpartum depression? Data were colllected using the CINAHL database and PubMed. Eight peer-reviewed and reliable research articles were then screened for analysis by reading the overall literature. Three main categories were generated: Education about postpartum depression, Postpartum depression screening, and Recognize the causes of postpartum depression.
Conclusion
Research suggests that education, use of the Postpartum Depression Identification Tool (EPDS) and understanding the causes of postpartum depression can help nurses identify postpartum depression. Nurses need more expertise and professional nursing competencies on postpartum depression. Knowledge base and nursing skills can be enhanced through specific training.
