Sexual harassment is prevalent in all types of workplaces, and the forms and types of sexual harassment are complex and diverse. Sexual harassment not only has negative physical and psychological effects on victims, but also harms employers, companies, and even society. Due to the particularity of the nursing profession, the nursing profession faces a higher proportion of sexual harassment than other professions.
The aim of this study is to explore nurses’ experience of sexual harassment at work and to provide information on nurses' experiences with sexual harassment to create a nurse friendly work environment.
A literature review was conducted, and data was retrieved from CINAHL and PUBMED data bases. Five articles were reviewed and analysed using an inductive content analysis approach.
Five categories were identified: Verbal sexual harassment, Physical sexual contact, Non-verbal sexual Harassment, Ambiguous harassment in male victim and Unwanted attention harassment.
Nurses experience a variety of types and forms of sexual harassment in the workplace. Relatively little research has been done on male nurses' experiences of sexual harassment. In order to better generalize the types and forms of sexual harassment experiences among nurses, future researchers should increase research on male nurses' sexual harassment experiences to obtain more comprehensive and complete data. Given the diversity of nurses' experiences of sexual harassment, policy makers should have the policy responsibility to work as a team to manage and reduce the negative impact of sexual harassment on nurses. For medical organizations, a simple and effective reporting mechanism should be established to help nurses deal with the possible negative effects of sexual harassment in a timely manner.
