The GDevelop 5 and Unity 2021 game engines and the games developed with them were compared to bring out the differences between them. The topic came from an interest in finding out what the process of developing a video game would be like. The game engines were chosen based on popularity and their properties. The objectives were to find out and present the differences between the GDevelop and Unity game engines, and the games developed with them. The aim was also to pick the game engine which would be easier to use in developing a two-dimensional endless runner game. The research was conducted using the comparative research method, which through experimentation was used to find the differences and similarities between the subjects. The results showed that the most significant differences between the GDevelop and Unity game engines were in the way the game logic was implemented and the usability of the user interface. They also showed that there were no significant differences between the games that were developed. The conclusion of the thesis was that the GDevelop 5 game engine was the easier of the choices to use in developing a two-dimensional endless runner game. The implementation of game logic with a visual editor, as well as the interface’s simplicity and easy learnability were the main reasons for drawing the conclusion.
