Tiivistelmä
The 3D bioprinting industry is a relatively new, yet competitive field. It has many interesting applications for example in healthcare and pharmaceutical industry, and 3D bioprinting may help to solve problems such as cancer treatment, or organ transplants and food shortages. As the industry is growing rapidly and many new companies have been established in recent years, a comprehensive picture of the field is needed.
The objective of this study is to examine the global competition in the 3D bioprinting industry and to create a competitor analysis for the commissioning company. The commissioning company of this thesis is a 3D bioprinting business in need of an up-to-date information about the market and the competitors. Therefore, an industry outlook is addressed, and the competitors are identified. Based on this information, a positioning map is created and the company’s strengths in the market are induced.
The thesis focuses on 3D bioprinting industry and mainly on low-cost extrusion-based bioprinters. However, some established companies are considered as well as future technologies. Other types of additive manufacturing are excluded from this study.
The thesis is a qualitative study, and for the sample material content analysis is made. For theoretical framework, different theories are utilized. For industry outlook and competitive forces, Porter’s Five Forces are used to give a good understating of the 3D bioprinting industry. Porter’s Five Forces also helps to form a positioning map. In addition, generic competitive strategies help to see a competitive advantage. Customer needs, segmentation, satisfaction, and equity are considered, as well as the company image or brand, as they all affect competition and gaining a competitive advantage. A SWOT analysis is introduced and created for the commissioning company.
As a result of this thesis, an information package is included in the appendices for the commissioning company.
