Clinical depression is a common psychiatric disorder which affects people, with an increasing number of individuals who require care regarding their mental health condition. We must gain knowledge and understanding to care for patients and take responsibility to positively impact a person’s mental health. (World Health Organization, 2003).
This thesis aims to understand the best possible care methods for patients with clinical depression. Emphasis is placed upon determining how nurses can demonstrate a caring approach towards patients and the challenges nurses and patients face within patient care.
Data was collected by implementing a scoping review which contained an inclusion and exclusion criteria which yielded a total of eight final articles. The articles contain patient, nurse, and a combination of patient and nurse experiences to determine how patient care for clinical depression can be advanced.
A total of four final categories are used to understand the best possible care methods for patients and to determine how nurses can demonstrate a caring approach towards patients and challenges experienced by patients and nurses. The categories include, bias experienced within patient care, work environment of nurses, patient specific care with importance on what patients require to advance care, and what patients require for effective follow-up care.
The established results can serve as a good basis to further explore the best possible care methods for patients with depression. This could be accomplished by using individual interviews of nurses and patients. Patient experiences can be further explored, and nurse experiences can be used to evaluate perceived methods of care which benefitted patients previously and the support nurses require to effectively give care to patients.
