Type 2 diabetes can be described as a global epidemic with its pressing impact affecting developed as well as newly emerging economies. Its severity is largely predicated on its associated complications. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that is characterized by the inability of the pancreas to produce enough insulin, or when there is inefficiency in the use of insulin produced, causing an accumulation in blood sugar (glucose) levels in the body (Alvarez et al., 2018). This study is a literature review that seeks to interrogate the roles nurses play in the preventing and managing of type 2 diabetes. The study attempts to provide an answer to the research question; What roles do nurses play in the management and prevention of type 2 diabetes?
Dorothea E Orem’s Nursing theory was employed as the theorical framework for this study. Databases such as Science direct, PubMed and Google scholar were employed in the data collection. Fourteen articles were retrieved to obtain information on the core objective to answer the research question. Based on the findings from the reviewed data, the fatality and prevalence of T2DM cannot be underestimated. However, the condition can be prevented and managed. In conclusion, nurses play an important role in the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes.
