The importance of appropriate acoustic conditions in the listening room when designing a HiFi system is a well known fact. In professional applications such as recording studios a well suited acoustic design is inevitable for the function of the studio. For the home users however such complicated constructions are out of reach because of both financial and practical reasons. At the same time the interest for acoustical treatment of the home listening room is growing rapidly, and many HiFi enthusiasts feel confused about how to approach the problem.
This paper deals with acoustic design of the home listening room. The readers will be familiarized with the key concepts that are of importance to analyze the acoustic properties of ones listening room, and to further study the subject. Furthermore a number of effective and economical designs of acoustic elements suitable for home use are presented. Finally a real listening room is investigated and suitable acoustic elements are constructed for the room, and the results are confirmed with measurements and listening tests. Both the measurement method and the measurement equipment are presented and the measurement data is compared as the acoustic elements are gradually added to the room in a number of steps.
