The final year project presented in this thesis and its project were carried out in cooperation with Liana Technologies, a company specializing in digital marketing services and software. The goal of the thesis was to propose a solution for web developers at Liana to begin building enterprise-level websites using WordPress, a popular open-source content management system (CMS). This was achieved by developing a custom theme for WordPress, as well as compiling a list of recommended plugins to extend the platforms default functions.
The thesis investigated the current WordPress landscape using a set of websites inherited by the company through site-migration cases. These cases offered an opportunity to analyze the methods used to build contemporary websites with WordPress, and evaluate them alongside the project requirements. These requirements were to create a WordPress site that mirrored the functionality and usability of an enterprise site built on the company’s proprietary system, LianaCMS. The project’s maintainability and relevance to current development practices at Liana was also considered.
The project resulted in the creation of a demo WordPress site exhibiting the developed theme and plugin selection. The theme adds support for new content types, as well as integrating with WordPress’s Gutenberg block-system. In extending WordPress’s capabilities to build an enterprise-level site, the plugins that proved most effective were Advanced Custom Fields Pro, Polylang, WooCommerce, and Contact Form 7.
