Kyselyn pohjalta toteutetaan tiivistetty ohje varsomiskaudelle kasvattajien tueksi. ABSTRACT
This thesis is a review of taking care of neonatal foals. Knowing the normal behavior of a newborn foal is part of identifying a sick foal. The aim of the thesis is to facilitate the identification of a sick newborn foal and thereby also to increase the knowledge of breeders about the most common health problems of newborn foals.
When problems occur the condition of the newborn foal deteriorates rapidly and therefore it is important to identify the symptoms of a sick foal. The work also puts the responsibility aspects of breeding into consideration, as the resulting foal requires treatment and in some cases treatment can only be provided in hospital settings. This will also increase costs.
RePro Oy Hevospraktiikka is the commissioner of the work and the expertise of horse disease specialveterinarian Marika Nevala-Posio in mare practice has been utilized in the work. The survey carried out as part of the thesis examines the diseases in newborn foals and their treatment. On the basis of the survey, a condensed guide for the breeding season will be implemented to support breeders.
