Tiivistelmä
The main objective of this study was to explore the motivations and background of the Generation Z employees on medium-sized logistics company Logistikas from Rauma, Finland. The motivation for this research was to explore and point out the needs the new generations entering the working market requires for their workplace wellbeing. The correct leadership of new generations at the workplace may lead to better productivity as well as wellbeing.
The research was conducted as qualitative research that used survey-based questionnaire as data collection method. The literature review of Generation Z and their employment habits worked as solid knowledge base for this study as well as for the survey questionnaire. The data were analyzed as qualitative content analysis and considered mainly the perception of the Logistikas as employer. The data was collected in the spring of 2020 and considered 11 different respondents of the targeted group.
The results revealed that the Generation Z employees in Logistikas have different perception of the leadership than what the literature review suggests. For example, the employees of Logistikas would wish for more authoritative leadership with clear hierarchy. Although the literature review suggests the Generation Z in general wishes for more independency and empowerment. The results also suggest that the Generation Z employees of Logistikas do not have firm opinion on the leadership they experience.
It was determined that there is low number of studies considering Generation Z and their leadership needs on domestic market. Therefore, this study has opportunity to work as solid base for further research by scaling up the number of respondents on company, unit or area level or by exploring the background and domestics of the respondents on higher individual level. Overall, this study provides basic, yet well founded understanding of leadership perception by Generation Z on single company level.
