DevOps engineer - erään työuran alku

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to provide a diverse view of a starting DevOps engineer’s career at Tietoevry. The DevOps operation model would seem to be quite a difficult concept to grasp, even to professionals, thus the premise of this thesis was born. The thesis will provide a glimpse into the operating model itself, some of the technologies used, and the experiences of a few DevOps engineers taking their first steps in the DevOps career path. The theory part stems from various online sources, which describe not only the operating model, but also misconceptions and erroneous application of DevOps model.

I chose to write this thesis with the application of a diary model since I believe it will best describe the start of a DevOps career. To get a broader view I also utilize an online survey via email, which I sent to select DevOps engineers in my unit who have been employed in the role for no more than a year. The values, principles, and the history of Tietoevry as a company also get a spotlight in one part of the thesis. Through the experience of the writer of this thesis, and based on the email survey results, we can state that the DevOps model can be very elusive and strange territory to those not previously acquainted with it. Based on the sources I’ve found online; versatile understanding of the model can be challenging even to professionals. DevOps right now is in a state of constant evolution, hence a full integration of it flawlessly to an organisation is not easy by any means.

Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on kuvailla mahdollisimman monipuolisesti DevOps engineerin uran alkutaivalta Tietoevryllä, koska DevOps-toimintamalli vaikuttaa olevan varsin vaikeaselkoinen ja monipuolinen käsite. Opinnäytetyö pyrkii avaamaan lukijalle DevOps-toimintamallia, eräitä siinä käytettäviä teknologioita, sekä muutaman DevOps engineerin odotuksia ja kokemuksia uransa alkutaipaleelta. Teoriapohjana on käytetty lukuisia lähteitä, jotka kertovat DevOps-toimintamallista ja sen terminologiasta. Tekotavaksi valikoitui päiväkirjamalli, sillä se kuvaa mielestäni parhaiten työuran alkuvaiheita. Päiväkirjamallissa hyödynnän lisäksi sähköpostikyselyä, jonka olen loppusyksyn 2021 aikana lähettänyt Tietoevryllä samalla ammattinimikkeellä toimiville, alle vuoden talossa olleille työntekijöille. Kerron myös hieman Tietoevryn arvoista, historiasta ja periaatteista. Kirjoittajan oman kokemuksen ja sähköpostikyselyn perusteella voidaan todeta, että DevOps-toimintamalli saattaa olla hyvinkin outo käsite sitä ennestään tuntemattomille. Teoriapohjan perusteella voidaan myös todeta, että toimintamallin monipuolinen ymmärrys on haastavaa jopa ammattilaisille. DevOps on jatkuvassa kehitysmurroksessa oleva toimintamalli, jonka oikeaoppinen sisällyttäminen mihin tahansa organisaatioon ei suju aivan helposti.
