The Covid-19 pandemic has required virtual working from many companies, bringing multiple challenges for employees’ wellbeing. However, as the employees are increasingly expecting more flexibility and control over their work, the virtual working is predicted to continue even in the future. Additionally, virtual working offers multiple benefits for the employer, such as cost savings and increased employee productivity. The hybrid working model seems to serve the interests of most companies as the in-office work is still seen valuable for certain work tasks and as a way of confronting certain wellbeing challenges.
This thesis is a research type of bachelor’s thesis in the major specialization of HRM. This thesis is commissioned by Plan International Finland, which is a non-profit, independent development and humanitarian organization. The commissioning company has also shifted to virtual working due to the pandemic and is widely applying a hybrid working model. Asthe wellbeing of employees is important for them, it has created the need for this thesis.
The results of this thesis are drawn from interviews and a survey from the commissioning company’s personnel. The goals of this thesis are to find out the most common wellbeing challenges in the virtual working environment, to find ways to create a successful hybrid model supporting the wellbeing of employees, and additionally, find out how to support the supervisors’ wellbeing in the virtual working environment. Also, recommendations on how to tackle the wellbeing challenges are given for the commissioning company.
The theory focuses on the virtual working environment and it’s challenges, wellbeing at work, and employee wellbeing management and strategies. These also include tools for companies to assess their current state of wellbeing and to develop a wellbeing action plan for the future.
The data was collected in two phases. The supervisors and the employees of Plan International Finland were interviewed as separate groups and the results were supported by a previously conducted survey done by the commissioning company.
As the key findings of this research, the regular measurement and understanding the wellbeing challenges of employees is essential. Also, the dimensions of wellbeing should not be thought as separate entities, and the developed wellbeing strategy should align with the company’s overall strategy. Therefore, the commissioning company is also advised to conduct a new wellbeing measurement in the near future, in addition to developing an appropriate action plan due to the constantly changing working environment.
