This thesis discussed the development of the recycling and reuse system of furniture (movables) in the social and health sector of the City of Helsinki organization. The need for the study arose from the Helsinki city strategy and the roadmap for sharing and circular economy. The theoretical basis of the work encompassed the theory of circular economy and digitalization as its promoter as well as the revised Waste Act and sustainable management. The thesis also introduced the similar system for recycling and circulation of goods and items of the City of Turku, which was already piloted in Helsinki, too. According to the City of Helsinki recycling guidelines for movables, the Items of Recycling system should be also used for recycling furniture. The problem was that the staff did not know the system well enough.
The survey of the current situation and its challenges was conducted in the autumn of 2021 in cooperation with the staff. Interviews and observation were used as research methods. Photographs of furniture and warehouses were taken to support the observation. In addition, the city's guidelines and practices were reviewed. Finally, the data were compiled and development proposals were made to improve the system and efficiency. The results were presented to the personnel. In the future, the field of urban environment in Helsinki will utilize the outcomes of the study and thus promote the reuse of furniture in a more sustainable direction.
