Tiivistelmä
The subject of this thesis was speed, strength and endurance training for adolescent footballers in Kenya. The commissioner of this work was the Football Kenya Federation (FKF). Football is a popular sport in Kenya, but the development of football in Kenya has been ineffective due to poor coaching standards, lack of information and inadequate facilities. This has also resulted in Kenya being able to produce few world class footballers. The purpose of this thesis was to provide easily accessible information to upcoming coaches in Kenya by developing a booklet that could be distributed to coaches. The booklet provides information on speed, strength and endurance training for adolescent footballers in Kenya.
The standard of football in the world is improving. Professional players in several European leagues earn big salaries. The ultimate dream for most footballers is to one day play professionally for teams such as Barcelona FC or Real Madrid. To have a chance to achieve such dreams, players need to be talented, work hard and have good coaching from an early age. Speed, strength and endurance are key qualities that every professional football player should possess.
The booklet, which is a product of this thesis, gives theoretical background information on how to train speed, strength and endurance. The booklet also provides drills and exercises that can be used to develop these three aspects as well as providing information on how to test each of them.
Previous research has shown that speed, strength and endurance training can be effectively implemented for adolescent footballers. Speed and endurance training are the two aspects that do not require many facilities. However, strength training is more challenging without facilities such as a weight room, but it can also be trained effectively in Kenya by using some basic strength developing exercises.
This booklet has been made specifically for the Kenyan environment. As a result, the limited facilities available to most adolescent footballers in Kenya dictated the drills and exercises that are included in this booklet.
