Tiivistelmä
Yleisin unihäiriö on unettomuus.
The most common sleep disorder is insomnia. In Finland almost 12 percent of adults suffer from persistent insomnia. Insomnia is when a person has difficulty falling asleep, sleeping, waking up too early in the morning or having poor sleep quality in a situation where the person should be able to sleep. Chronic insomnia may cause somatic or psychiatric disorders and weakened functional capacity.
The purpose of this thesis is to gather research data on non-pharmacological treatments for insomnia and to produce content for the insomnia treatment based on descriptive literature review. The goal of the thesis is to share information related to non-pharmacological treatment of insomnia to patients suffering from insomnia and to healthcare professionals.
The result of this thesis showed that cognitive-behavioral therapy is the most effective method of non-pharmacological treatment of insomnia. According to research’s sleep stimulus, relaxation, bed restriction and cognitive-behavioral therapy together completes the criteria for treatment that have been shown to be effective. In the future, this thesis can be used to produce the content of an insomnia treatment path for patients.
