Tiivistelmä
Internationalisation is a major part of business studies. In the age of active globalisation, its importance is increasing, particularly in countries like Finland where domestic market is relatively limited. With the emergence of a large number of technological start-ups whose offering is unique and highly scalable, the limitations of Finland’s domestic market are felt even more acutely. Studying internationalisation helps firms embed the process of expansion abroad in their initial plan of business activities. That helps them obtain an early competitive advantage. In addition, a large number of already existing firms are considering an international expansion. This thesis studies internationalisation from two perspectives: theory and practice. The first part looks into the overall theory of internationalisation, the second assesses the Euro Scalers programme – a sales accelerator commissioned by the city of Tampere that helps businesses expand abroad. Its ultimate purpose is to help firms understand the versatility of internationalisation as a branch of business studies and give as much of practical guidance as the formal of a Bachelor’s thesis work allows. While presenting academic knowledge and giving prescriptive frameworks is important, appreciating the flexibility of the theory of internationalisation helps firms understand that every case is unique. This thesis demonstrates why the study of internationalisation is so versatile and why following bookcases will not always results in success. The process of internationalisation requires creativity, working with a large volume of information and knowledge, as well as robust decision making.
