Tiivistelmä
Motivation has for several years been difficult to measure, especially from an organisational point of view, where the essential part of a company is its employees. To understand how to become more efficient and increase the performance among employees, management has to look back on themselves and ask what motivates the staff, and what changes that can be made to encourage the right environment.
This research paper will explore the motivation among employees working at a hospitality service company. The commissioner of this research was Café Norden ApS and the research will focus on the organisations employees with the research questions: “What motivates people in the restaurant business?” and “How to improve employee motivation in a restaurant business?”
The theoretical framework of this study has been relevant with different theories, The Self-determination theory by E. Deci & R. Ryan and the add on theory of Drive by D. Pink, and the 16 Basic Desires by S. Reiss. An online questionnaire builds around the Self-Determination and Drive theory allowing the employees to answer questions with elaborate details connected to especially three key words: autonomy, purpose and mastery. According to the Drive theory motivation can be triggered with the right amount of autonomy, understanding the purpose of the job required, and being able to succeed and master difficult tasks.
A second questionnaire concerning S. Reiss’ 16 Basic Desires, was made to let the employees find out what truly motivates themselves. The 16 Basic Desires is a theory which explores different desires where the person will rate the desires though various questions as low importance, average importance and very importance.
Through the results the recommendations for the organisations was made, which included feedback, more autonomy over the tasks given, management expression and policy evaluation, as well as a profile of which desires were more favourable to look for when hiring new staff.
