The aim of this thesis was to provide information on the professional identity of community educator students in the final stages of their studies. The purpose was to identify the issues of their professional identity, as well as to get answers on how to better support the development of professional identity during studies. A key perspective in the study was the perception of the community educator as a generalist. This was considered as a specific basis for the formation of the community educator’s professional identity.
The thesis was carried out as a qualitative study with four thematic interviews as a method of data collection: two identity workshops for students, a workshop on the identification of competence for students and alumni, and an identity workshop related to ongoing curriculum renewal for Humak staff. The data was analysed by using theming as a method.
The results indicated that there are challenges specific to the generalists defining the characteristics of the community educator. At the same time, specific theoretical frames were very little relied on defining the community educator’s skills. However, the study showed a clear social pedagogical tuning in the background of the community educator’s practices. As the support of students' professional identity formation, the clarification of the pedagogical theory basis of the studies and identity work through the studies were emphasized. Strengthening the role of social pedagogy in community educator studies appeared to be a considerable means of clarifying the pedagogical basis of studies.
This thesis can be utilized and applied in multiple contexts: in reforming curriculum in community educator studies, in strategy work related to coaching methods in Humak, in course implementations, in student coaching, and in alumni activities. At the same time, it opens up opportunities for further development and research for example in relation to social pedagogy in community education and identity work during the studies. For community educators and community educator students, the thesis provides a surface against which to reflect their own questions of professional identity, as well as perceptions of themselves as a community educator.
