Tästä huolimatta tutkimuksessa ilmeni, että yli puolet haastateltavista eivät tiedä, mistä he voivat tarvittaessa hakea apua päihdeongelmiin. The aim of this thesis was to study the extent of awareness and use of intoxicants by youth with immigrant backgrounds by conveying, bringing forward and discussing about their own thoughts, perspectives, and experiences. The aim of the thesis was to produce up-to-date information on substance abuse awareness and substance use among immigrant youth, for the use of professionals working with immigrant youth, and social and health care students.
The thesis was carried out as a quantitative study. The target group was youth with immigrant background aged between 18-21, who were studying in preparatory education. The research material was collected using a structured interview form. The interview form was set out to study the thoughts, views, and experiences of young people on substance use, substance abuse experimentation, and their knowledge on substance abuse. The theoretical framework of the thesis dealt with intoxicants, mental health strategy, substance abuse and addiction strategy, substance abuse policy, substance abuse use of immigrant youth, and factors that predispose to and protect against them. In the theoretical framework, also the key concepts of integration, immigration and youth were defined for the context of the thesis.
The results of the research showed low levels of regular substance use in the target group, but there were significantly more substance abuse experiments. Most of the young people (with immigrant backgrounds) first substance abuse experiment took place at the age of 10-13 years. Substance abuse experiments all dealt with alcohol and tobacco or snuff. The results also showed that there were also cannabis experiments in the target group. No other drug use or experimentation occurred in the study group. According to the interviewees, beliefs and culture did not influence the substance abuse. On other hand it was felt to have an influence on staying clear of the substance abuse in the case of some of the interviewees. Most of the interviewees felt that they had enough information on intoxicants, its harms, and risks. Nevertheless, the study found that more than half of the interviewees did not know where to seek help with substance abuse problems if needed.
