Working went through a major transformation in early 2020 when the global Covid-19 pandemic forced a large proportion of working-age population to remote work. Service designers were not an exception in this regard, and the traditional face-to-face designing services shifted to remote design.
The purpose of this thesis was to find out the experiences of service designers about virtual co-creation during the pandemic. The aim of the study was to increase knowledge of how the transition from face-to-face co-creation into co-creation in a virtual environment has succeeded.
The study examined the challenges and opportunities for co-creation, especially regarding workshops in a virtual environment, and how well the facilitation remotely over the network has succeeded. In addition, the study mapped out the future development of virtual co-creation.
The empirical part of the thesis utilized the mixed methods research strategy, which combined both quantitatively and qualitatively collected data. The data was collected by survey and focused interview. The survey was conducted using a Webropol online survey in June 2021 aimed at people who had worked as service designers for at least three years. The in-depth focused interviews were carried out in September 2021 with four service design professionals.
Based on the results of the study, a description was obtained of how service designers have experienced their own work in a virtual environment and what challenges and opportunities virtuality has brought to their work. According to the results, especially concentration and motivation of the participants as well as the loss of creativity were challenges for the virtual co-creation; on the other hand, the elimination of pre-determined location made it possible to participate from a long distance. In terms of the future, service designers see the hybrid model as an opportunity, so that certain parts of the co-creation workshops could be implemented in a virtual environment.
