terveydenhuollossa.
Tutkimuskysymyksiä muodostui kolme, miten kuoleva potilas kokee tulleensa
kohdatuksi? Mitkä hoitotyön tekijät edistävät kohdatuksi tulemista? Mitkä tekijät estävät kohdatuksi tulemista? Opinnäytetyö on toteutettu kuvailevana kirjallisuuskatsauksena.
Lisäksi kuolevalle potilaalle on tärkeää omaisten läsnäolo kuoleman lähestyessä. Tästä syystä onkin tärkeää, että hoitotyön ammattilainen tunnistavat
kuoleman merkit, jotta potilas pääsee hyvästelemään läheiset.
Jatkotutkimusehdotukseksi esitetään, että surututkimusta tehtäisiin jatkossa
myös kuolevan näkökulmasta. Suru ja luopuminen yhdistetään läheisen menettäneen kokemuksiin, ja tästä syystä kuolevan potilaan kokemus jää suppeaksi. Tämän lisäksi kuolevan potilaan kohdatuksi tulemista voisi tutkia eri kulttuureista lähtien. Kansainvälisyys ja maahanmuutto lisääntyvät jatkuvasti, ja
kulttuurien ymmärtämisellä on tärkeä rooli myös surututkimuksessa.
Asiasanat: kuoleva potilas, kohtaaminen, suru, luopuminen Fatal diagnosis can be surprising and trigger a process in grief and renunciation in patient’s life. The goal of healthcare professionals is to help and support
patient in this progress, that’s why the objective of this thesis was to find out
how terminally ill patients are encountered in the healthcare.
There were three research questions: How is a terminally ill patient’s experience encountered? Which nursing approaches support being encountered?
And which nursing factors prevent being encountered? The thesis was carried
out as a descriptive literature review. Eight studies were selected for the literature review, and they were analysed thematically.
The results showed that terminally ill patients were encountered in two ways:
successfully or unsuccessfully. Both kinds of experiences showed up equally.
The basis of feeling successfully encountered was formed by healthcare professionals’ good social skills, clear communication about the diagnosis as well
as consideration for individual needs and hopes. Bad experiences resulted
from misunderstandings, lack of experience in terminal care, patient transfers
and hectic work.
As a conclusion, a bad experience can have an unpleasant effect on the patient and on the patient’s family. Therefore, it is important to observe the way
nursing students are learning social skills while in education or to make
sure that there is additional education about social skills when meeting a terminally ill patient. Furthermore, a healthcare professional should be able to
recognize the signs of an approaching death so the patient is able to say
goodbye to their family.
The further development proposals include researching more specifically the
experiences of terminally ill patients. Sorrow and renunciation are often connected to those relatives who have lost a loved one, and therefore a terminally
ill patient’s point of view remains narrow. In addition, researching how different
cultures react to grief and renunciation is another further development proposal. Immigration is increasing all the time, and for this reason, it is important
to understand grief and renunciation from different cultural perspectives.
Keywords: terminally ill patient, encountering, grief and renunciation
