Isosuutintulostin on pursotukseen perustuva 3D-tulostin.
This thesis focuses on studying SataLiina Oy's natural fibre composite, which contained polypropylene (PP) and hemp fibre (30%) as the natural fibre. Two different versions of the composite were studied, one using primary plastic as the matrix plastic and the other using recycled plastic made from consumer packaging. The aim of the study was to examine the processability of the material in the extrusion process and in additive manufacturing.
An extrusion process and a large nozzle printer utilising an additive manufacturing method were used for studying the material. The large nozzle printer is an extrusion-based 3D printer.
While processing the material in the extrusion process, the process equipment was updated to be more suitable for processing natural fibre composites. This included the commissioning and trial runs of the new equipment. The composite made from recycled plastic was processed with extrusion to batches with lower fibre content (5 %, 10 % and 15 %) and smaller granulate size compared to the original granulate. The material was tested on the large nozzle printer with the original 30 % fibre content and with batches with smaller fibre content. In addition to extrusion, the fibre content of the material was lowered by increasing its content of plastic.
The composite made from primary plastic was not processable with the extruder or the large nozzle printer, in a manner which would have enabled further research on the material. The composite made from recycled plastic did not cause problems in the extrusion process during the producing of granulates, but no filament of even quality could be produced. Based on the test runs with the large nozzle printer, the original granules of recycled plastic composite did not flow evenly in the printer and lowering the fibre content by mixing was not enough to homogenize printing quality. The most stable flow and printing quality was achieved with a batch that was extruded to a composite with a 5 % fibre content. The printing quality was lowered by material warping during cooling, which is characteristic of PP in 3D printing. Based on the results composite material is not suitable for printing small or dimensionally accurate pieces. Instead, the material would be more suitable for printing larger pieces.
