In this thesis 15 tattoo flashes were made as a personal creative project. The research subjects were the creator’s development during the process, the illustrative style’s suitability for tattoo flashes and the comparison between hand drawn and digitally drawn pictures. The goals were to create a unified collection of tattoo flashes, the creator’s expressive development, and understanding different tattoo styles.
The tattoo flashes were created by drawing with a fineliner and a digital drawing tablet. Literature of the tattoo industry, internet-articles and interviews with tattoo artists were used as research materials.
The finished flash collection came to be as expected. The creator learned a lot about different tattooing styles during the project, and combined them with their own style of drawing.
In the creator’s experience drawing traditionally suited making tattoo flashes better than doing them digitally. When drawing by hand observing the size and the amount of details in the flashes came more naturally. The creator noticed to adding an unnecessary amount of details and took it into account in further drawings. It was noticed that any art style can be applied to tattooing when the aging of tattoos and limitations of tattooing techniques are taken into account.
