This degree project is about Munchausen by Proxy. Munchausen by Proxy is a form of child abuse and an unusual mental disorder, where the perpetrator causes symptoms or illness on their child to get attention.
The purpose of the degree was tto map out what already has been reported about how the victim is affected by the violence through a scoping review. The writer also wanted answers to what kind of methods of violence the perpetrator uses and what warning signals the nurse can respond to in order to quickly identify these cases. Nine articles were included in this project. The articles were published between 2013 and 2020. Katie Eriksson’s theory of suffering has been used as a theoretical starting point for the degree project.
The results of the degree project were divided into four main themes: the perpetrator, the victim, methods of abuse and the impact of violence on the victim. The degree project provided an insight into how the child is affected by this type of abuse and what forms of abuse the perpetrator uses. To ensure the safety of the child, it is important that Munchausen by Proxy is diagnosed at an early stage. The conclusion is that there is a need for more research, especially about the victim and their experiences.
