Gränsland: där självbiografi möter serieteckning

Abstract

I detta examensarbete diskuterade jag mitt skapande av ett semisjälvbiografiskt serieverk baserat på min ungdomstid i min hemstad Esbo. Med mitt examensarbete ville jag undersöka hur självbiografi och serieteckning relaterar till varandra och vad de olika genrerna tar fram i varandra. Jag ville även undersöka hur mitt eget skapande kom att ta sig uttryck i ett serieformat; ett format som vid inledandet av projektet ännu var relativt nytt för mig.

Inledningsvis diskuterade jag inspirationen bakom arbetet. Detta inkluderade delvis de händelser i mitt liv som tas upp i verket, men också de självbiografier och serieverk jag använde som referens för mitt skapande. Jag beskrev även den praktiska processen gällande textförfattandet, illustrerandet, och slutförandet av verket. Ytterligare tog jag upp både serieromanen och självbiografin som genrer, och genrernas definitioner och historia. Jag forskade även i vilka tendenser genrerna har att överlappa och varför. Jag försökte även placera mitt eget verk i en konstnärlig och litterär kontext genom att i jämföra det med tidigare självbiografiska serieverk som behandlat liknande ämnen.

In this bachelor’s thesis I have discussed my process of creating a semi-autobiographical collection of comics based on my youth in my former hometown Espoo. With my final work I wanted to explore the relationship between autobiographies and comic books and what elements the genres bring out in each other. I also wanted to explore how my own work would take form in the format of a comic book; a format that still was relatively new to me at the beginning of the project.

I began by discussing the inspiration behind the work. This partly included the events in my life that the work focuses on, but also the autobiographies and graphic novels I used as references for my work. I also described the practical process regarding the writing, illustrating, and completion of the work. Further, I discussed the graphic novel and the autobiography as genres, and the definition and history of the genres. I also brought up how the genres tend to overlap and why. I also tried to place my own work in an artistic and literary context by comparing it to earlier autobiographical comics that dealt with similar topics.
