Abstract
This thesis is an artistic and a qualitative study, of which research approach is autoethnographic. The thesis consists of an exhibition and a written part. The study relied on phenomenology, which produced knowledge and meanings through experience. The aim of the study was to understand from which the author’s artistic ideas come from and what happens in artistic work, as well as what kind of stories are told through art to oneself and others.
The written part interpreted the author's thoughts, experiences, feelings, observations, and the understanding based on them. By looking at photographs of a close relative, the most memorable topics, such as childhood games and family craftsmanship, were selected for closer inspection. These were mirrored for artistic work and their possible similarities to research questions. The topic was approached from an autobiographical perspective and partly with a storytelling approach. The thesis was an identity work, through which the identity of the artist was also built. The thesis enabled a deepening of the artistic thinking and process and through it opened a clearer picture of artistry.
The themes of the artistic work were drawn from the seemingly invisible, microscopic world and childhood memories. An initial inspiration of this thesis acted Ernst Haeckel's skillful and artistic research drawings, which were complemented by microscopic imagery of plant anatomy, phytoplankton, and cross-sectional images of plants. The art works of the exhibition are made with mixed media. In the works of the exhibition, one can see the artist`s memories of garden of childhood and hear the echoes of the past about the craftsmanship of grandparents.
