Tutkimus toteutettiin tähän tarkoitukseen laaditun kyselyn avulla. Vastaajia kyselyyn hankittiin marraskuun 2020 ja tammikuun 2021 välisenä aikana neljän ruokamarketin edustalla Mikkelissä, Savonlinnassa, Juvalla ja Mäntyharjulla. Saatua tutkimusaineistoa tulkittiin tilastotieteellisin menetelmin.
Organic agriculture has positive effects on environment and for that reason it is desired to increase almost all over the world. Research has shown that there is less chemical and nutrient leaching and more advantages for biodiversity when organic agriculture methods are used in comparison with conventional agriculture. To make increase in production profitable, there needs to be increase in the demand, too. The objective of this study was to determine customer views on organic products in the South Savo region and to determine factors that would increase the consumption of organic food. Also, this study aimed to survey consumers’ environmental concerns and views on the environmental impacts of organic agriculture.
The study was conducted with a survey that was prepared for this purpose. Participants for the survey were contacted between November 2020 and January 2021 in front of four markets in Mikkeli, Savonlinna, Juva and Mäntyharju. The acquired research data was then analysed with statistical methods.
The results showed that nearly half of the participants bought organic food regularly. Women bought organic food notably more than men and those who use organic foods regularly were more concerned about the environment. Organic food was found healthy and its quality good. Consumers also thought that it is responsible food. Lower prices might increase organic food consumption. Finnish customers would probably also increase the use of organic food, if there were more organic products that were produced in Finland. Most of the survey participants thought that the impact on environment with organic agriculture would be less harmful than with conventional agriculture, but the results also showed that a great number of the participants did not have sufficient knowledge of the subject. It would be beneficial to provide information on organic agriculture for the consumers, because knowledge has been shown to increase trust on organic products and that might increase the consumed amount of organic food. Consumers in South Savo were especially concerned about water pollution. If consumers knew that organic agriculture has been shown to cause less nutrient release than conventional agriculture, it might increase their interest in organic foods.
