The main purpose of the study was to conduct a situation analysis in product development among selected companies in the region of Vaasa. The secondary aim was to investigate how a university of applied sciences, such as Novia, can contribute to and at best facilitate the willingness of regional companies to engage in continuous product development.
A theoretical framework and an interview guide were prepared based on literature studies. The empirical part of the study was carried out during visits to seven different companies in the region, where respondents were interviewed. A comparative study was made parallel to the study: the curricula of the programmes in Mechanical and Production Engineering and Production Management at Novia University of Applied Sciences were compared with the Productontwikkeling programme at Hogeschool Artesis in Antwerp, Belgium.
The result is that there are five critical areas in which the companies interviewed clearly show their convergence of interests. These critical areas are markets, resources, needs, methods, and environmental issues, and they correspond to the theoretical framework of the study. The study also shows that there is an awareness concerning the importance of product development and that companies know that product development is necessary for them. For some of the companies the concept of product development in fact means product improvement which at the same time portrays the company’s way of maintaining product development activities. In order to create networks there is an ambition to cooperate with other companies and universities in the region.
