Since film was invented in the late 19th century, documentary films have been shown in cinemas, but in a smaller scale than fiction film. Between 1999-2009 the average viewing ratings for documentary films in Finnish cinemas was less than 9000 viewers per year, but in 2010 the ratings increased to approximately 157 000. In 2011 the ratings sunk, but they were still a lot higher than the average for the last decade. If you look at the statistics for 2012, it seems that the viewing ratings for documentaries will stay high (May 14th: 33 787 viewers in cinemas).
The purpose of this thesis is to find out the causes for the rise in popularity for documen-tary film in cinemas in Finland, and if this was just a short trend or a phenomenon that is here to stay. To research this in the best possible way, I have done a qualitative study and interviewed five persons with connections to the documentary film industry (production or distribution) in Finland. I have also studied the history of documentary film and cine-mas, to get a deeper insight in the subject. Through the interviews I have learned that the main reasons for the risen popularity of documentary film in cinemas is an increased in-terest in documentaries, and the digitalization of cinemas which has led to lower costs for film copies and thus enabled a wider distribution of films. Many foreign, internationally popular documentary films came to the cinemas during the first decade of this millenni-um, which may have had a positive effect on the Finnish documentary film market. More feature-length documentaries are made these days, and documentaries are more visibly promoted, which is one reasons for the risen popularity. The majority of the interviewees believed that documentary films have found their place in cinemas in Finland, and that the popularity will not descend.
