The purpose of this study is to gain knowledge about what influencer marketing means and to acquire the knowledge of how companies, both theoretically and practically, can go about applying influencer marketing in their marketing strategy. The study is done to give a deeper view and understanding of the subject to beauty care students, companies and others who are interested as the marketing method is relevant and current in 2021. Despite the fact that there is previous research done in influencer marketing, the respondent will contribute to the thesis by presenting essential information on how a company should think and act in order to succeed with the method.
The study is a qualitative study and has been done with semi-structured interview as data collection method. Five companies in different trades were interviewed about their use of influencer marketing and the interview material was then transcribed where content analysis was used as the data analysis method.
The results show that influencer marketing means that companies take advantage of influencers’ already built-up networks on social media to market a product or service. Companies can use the method as a support tool for marketing and effectively reach new target groups, and especially a younger target group. The opportunities that a company has with the method are to reach the specific target groups, increase brand awareness and effectively spread company messages in a credible way. The risks with the method are that incorrect information goes out, the desired result cannot be guaranteed and that the company chooses the wrong influencer to cooperate with who doesn’t support the company’s profile and values. To reduce these risks, it is important to never let go of control and always have a good communication with influencers and with any possibly intermediaries such as marketing agencies.
