In my thesis, I studied how interviews should be conducted and prepared for when the topic is emotionally sensitive. The thesis has a part that is a radio program called Poikuus tallella that I compiled for Yle Radio 1 in the spring of 2020. In the program, I interviewed men that are virgins and come from different backgrounds. Their personal sexual aspects, their experiences and feelings towards the idea of “true men” were in the core of the program. I studied interviewing styles and theories of the journalistic practice while making the program and after it aired. The goal of the study was to produce high quality journalistic content while also aiming for a positive connection with the interviewee.
The interviewing styles that I studied were “focused interview” and “in-depth-interview”. In addition, I compiled information on the matter of interviewing on emotionally sensitive topics. I explained how to practically prepare and execute the interview in a respecting, private and critical manner. Finally, I reflected on how a sensitive attitude towards the interviewee and a critical attitude towards your own role as an interviewer are important for any professional in the media field.
The conclusion of the study is that a thorough preparation and the building of mutual trust are necessary before the interview. Especially highlighting narrative importance, silence, listening and the understanding of the interviewer together make for a desirable outcome. With these and several other tools and modes of action the interviewer can expect broad and comprehensive answers that help reach the goal of the interview meanwhile also respecting the interviewees own need for privacy.
In this thesis student or even an experienced professional that uses interviews in his or her work can find helpful tools and angles for their own interviews.
