Abstract
Teleconsultation can be used to provide client-oriented and cost-effective services for the patients in North Karelia, where people live scattered. Teleconsultation means using, for example, a video call instead of meeting in person. Due to the Covid-19-pandemic, the topic is more relevant than ever.
The purpose of the thesis was to create a teleconsultation model which the Siun Sote psychiatric intensive outpatient care unit could use. With this model, Siun Sote can save time, money, and unnecessary traveling for both for the unit and their patients. The aim of the thesis was to provide the psychiatric personnel a tool for making their work safer and more efficient and to provide patients sufficiently intensive multidisciplinary care, also remotely. Another aim was to collect information about the experiences and competence of the personnel before using the model in a larger scale.
The material for the research was collected with a Webropol survey and analyzed using a data-driven thematic analysis. The results revealed when teleconsultation could be used, what obstacles were experienced and how to solve them. The conclusion was that teleconsultation is suitable for several situations in the care of psychiatric patients, the technical competence of the personnel varies and further technical training is needed. A further development idea is to do a follow up research to collect information on how the model has been perceived by the personnel and the patients of the outpatient department.
