Tiivistelmä
The aim of this bachelor`s thesis was to design and create a prominent corset suit as a stage costume for artist SITOI, that combines feminine and masculine concept of dressing. Corset suit must also help the artist to adopt the role of a performer. The ensemble should be long-lasting and versatile so it can be easily modified depending on different kinds of events and occasions. Feminine and masculine concept was wanted to combine to the style of the stage costume. Therefore, femininity and masculinity were studied in this work, how it appears in our culture and how it is adduced with clothing.
The core of the productive part of the thesis was to design and manufacture a stage costume that combines a corset and suit so that feminine and masculine elements are joined in balanced way. The theme was oriented by studying the concept of femininity and masculinity through history and image analysis.
Functionality, expressiveness, and aesthetics had to be considered in the design process and these factors were approached with Lamb & Kallal`s (1992) user-oriented FEA-model. The designer must understand the target consumer`s culture so that FEA-model can be used in the design process. To understand the culture open interview and participant observation was used as a research method and given information was used into applied FEA-model.
The thesis resulted in the corset suit that consists of trousers, an over-sized suit jacket and a corset that has removable straps. Femininity and masculinity are successfully combined into the ensemble in a way contrasting elements are balanced. Functionality, expressiveness, and aesthetics were evaluated together with the client and they were in line with the target fulfilling the criteria that was set to the FEA-model. The corset suit is pretentious and provocative ensemble promoting SITOI`s performing and artistry.
