The purpose of this thesis is to examine how eating disorders affect the everyday lives of young adults; how eating disorders affect romantic relationships, relationships with family and friends, as well as employments. We will present the most common eating disorder types and the problems regarding them. We are also interested to examine how social media affects people’s self-confidence and body image. In this study we used a qualitative research method by sending a questionnaire with open ended questions to people who have experienced eating disorders themselves. Seven women aged 22-42 participated in the research.
The results of this research seemed to support previous research that are mentioned in this study and therefore we can with certainty say that eating disorders are a significant problem that greatly affect human's social life. The answer among our respondents varied but there were also huge similarities between the answers on how eating disorders have affected their life. Many of the respondents experienced difficulties in maintaining intimate relationships and felt their relationships suffered. All the respondents have been negatively impacted by social media and some of the respondents claimed that they compared themselves to others and therefore felt inadequate as well as worse than those they compared themselves to. In this study we also found difficulties within the family, circle of friends and employments.
