Tiivistelmä
Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on selvittää koronaviruksen, eli COVID-19 -pandemian vaikutuksia matkailun ohjelmapalveluorganisaatioiden asiakasviestinnässä niiden kotisivuilla kesän 2020 aikana.
Yritysten havainnointia tehtiin kolmena kuukautena 10.05.2020 - 10.07.2020 välisellä ajalla.
The aim of the present bachelor’s thesis is to study the effects of the corona virus, i.e. the COVID-19 pandemic, on the customer communication of tourism program service organizations on their websites during the summer of 2020. A total of 26 companies from the Turku region representing different subsectors of the tourism program services were selected for the work. In addition, some events were observed, as they form a big part of the summer offering. The aim of the study is to explore how the pandemic affects companies and, especially, how well companies take it into account in their communication on their websites. The work is commissioned by Turku Science Park.
This thesis has been conducted by using a qualitative research method based on observation and theming. The study started by writing the theoretical part at the end of April 2020 and it was followed by the observation of the companies between 10 May 2020 and 10 July 2020. The theoretical part focuses on crisis management, crisis communication and business resilience in the tourism sector as well as tourism program services and their experiential nature. In addition, the thesis also discusses the corona crisis that prevails at the time the work is done.
Based on the observation results, it can be stated that most of the companies have taken into account the communication of the COVID-19 pandemic on their websites at some point during the observation period. However, there were differences between the companies as some companies provided comprehensive and continuous information and guidance while others only gave information in a few sentences and it was non-recurrent. Some companies had not even mentioned the whole pandemic, even though they continued to operate and thus their credibility suffered. Maintaining the tourism experience through communication also differed between the companies. However, the quality of information was affected by, among other things, whether the company shut down its operations for the entire summer of 2020 or whether they continued to operate.
Many of the companies had not yet taken safety instructions into account in May, but in June and July the situation was different. At that time, most of the companies that continued to operate also instructed their customers to do the right thing, for example with regard to hygiene measures. The work also looked at the effectiveness of program service companies in generating new ideas. This percentage remained at 22% by July, meaning that only six out of the 26 companies set out to develop new activities during the crisis.
