The aim of the thesis was to find out how the day care staff and children’s guardians experienced a change in the group structure. The change includes the transition phase and the pedagogical activity of a mixed group of children aged 1–5. The structural change is a part of the development of early childhood education in Hämeenlinna and the aim of the thesis is to support the transition from the same-age groups to mixed-age groups. The study was carried out in a daycare centre in Hämeenlinna, where the change had already been implemented.
The theoretical background deals with the guiding documents of early childhood education, the development of group structures in early childhood education in Hämeenlinna and the change implemented in the daycare centre under study. Pedagogy in a mixed group was also included, especially the planning of pedagogical activities, small group activities and a child’s learning in a group. A qualitative research method was used, and the data were collected by an electronic inquiry. The inquiry was answered by eight staff members and six guardians. The data were analysed by thematizing.
According to the results, the staff felt that the change was merely announced; however, they were able to influence its implementation. At first, the change raised concerns among both the staff and the guardians. Opportunities to develop ones’ work and the diversity of the children were regarded as positive things. In conclusion, small group activities, the sensitivity and professionalism of staff, and supporting the permanence of human relationships are important factors in a mixed group of children aged 1–5 years.
