It’s being said that the hearing children of deaf adults live between the deaf and the hearing worlds. In families, where the parents are deaf and the children are hearing, sign language and spoken language are often both being used and the languages support each other. This kind of combination in the family creates the home language. Hearing children of deaf adults are more or less bilingual, they have accepted the cultures of hearing and deaf. Hearing children of deaf adults are called CODA (Children of Deaf Adults).
My thesis is a qualitative research, in which I reflect the formation of my professional identity and my inner feeling of power in a narrative approach, by using the theory of empowerment of Juha Siitonen (1999). According to his dissertation, the categories of inner power are freedom, context, atmosphere, positivity, confidence, respect and responsibility.
The categories of inner power consist of 55 subprocesses, which I used in creating a half-structured theme interview for eight coda-interpreters, who all had made a long career as sign language interpreters. I have carried out the interviews during November 2019 – January 2020.
The transcribed material was examined by using the sub processes of the theory of inner power, combining themes. The results of the interviews were included in my story by generalizing and bringing forth single results and emphasizing some results. Through reflective thinking I became aware of my coda background and built a strong base for my professional identity.
My thesis, in a compact form, gives tools for educators of the sign language interpreter education programme lecturers and students to handle the theme coda. The theme coda should be used more and deeper as a theme in the education program of sign language interpreter. A student who has a coda background, should be encouraged in reflective thinking, because it helps in working on professional growth and strengthens the forming of a professional identity.
