The aim of this research was to explore the experiences the clients of the Naiset näkyviksi -project had about the employment relationship started while still in prison. The perspective was on release from the prison and on a confidential clientship. The purpose was also to highlight the need for female-exclusive work amongst women with a background in criminality. The thesis was made in cooperation with the Naiset näkyviksi -project of Kriminaalihuollon tukisäätiö, the Finnish Foundation for Supporting Ex-offenders.
The thesis discusses female exclusivity and women with a criminal background as an occurrence and the accumulation of underprivileged amongst these women. The thesis also brought up their special needs in meetings and encounters. Three (3) former or current clients of the Naiset näkyviksi -project were interviewed in the process of the thesis. These clients had been met by the employees of the project already during their time in prison.
The main results of the research were the need for multifaceted help to address individual needs, a confidential and honest clientship, and the importance of being supported in reaching different services in a critical life situation. Especially, after release from prison when personal adherence to services is particularly challenging. A clientship, in the project that started already during prison time, was found important and meaningful in terms of being able to engage to other services easier.
The work done in the project lowered the threshold to reach employees after release and further to build-up of a confidential relationship. As the project employees were already familiar, they were found less of an authority figure and therefore more approachable. The interviewees described the clientship in the project as confidential, honest, straightforward and appropriated.
Keywords: female exclusivity, criminal background, female prisoners, clientship, continuation of support
