The thesis was implemented as a development-oriented and functional thesis in cooperation with Norlandia Kindergartens. The aim was to produce an informative poster for the use of staff in early childhood education. Above all, to increase the staff’s preparedness and the capacity to identify, address and provide information about social care and child welfare services. The poster was implemented through the process of participatory co-development.
The poster was created as co-development involving early childhood education and care personnel using the Learning café method. During the process, the personnel influenced on the content and appearance of the poster. The process also caused discussion, especially, on the protection of the child in early childhood education and care. The theoretical basis of the work covered the forms and identification of abuse of the child and the cross-sectoral cooperation. The second theory section discussed service guidance and services for families with children in situations of maltreatment. The third theory section was about the protection of the child in early childhood education and care as a preventive child protection and the awakening of concern. The description of the process was widely presented.
The poster was introduced by the co-operation kindergartens. The co-development process itself, as well as a poster tool, would increase the capacity of staff to identify maltreatment and courage to act when concerns arise. It can therefore be thought that the co-development process served as an intervention for the staff and allowed them to stop at identifying child maltreatment in the midst of the daily work. The staff and the management representative considered the poster to be an important and welcome everyday tool that increases the staff's capacity to protect the child and to help the family.
