Käytännön tutkimusta on suoritettu Hirvaalla Lapin ammattikorkeakoulun opetusmetsissä.
Non-wood forest products are playing an increasingly important role in forestry, and berries account for a relatively large share. Bilberry is one of our most im-portant commercial berries, and increasing its yield is an interesting subject for research.
This thesis serves as a groundwork, which aims to provide forest owners with guidance that they can use to treat their forests to optimize bilberry growth. Practical research has been carried out in the teaching forests of Lapland Uni-versity of Applied Sciences in Hirvas. A total of 25 one-square-meter plots were set up and treated with various cuts and incineration. Pre-existing studies on the relationship between bilberry growth and forestry activities have been used as a theoretical basis. The aim was to find out what effects the forestry industry has to bilberry harvests and how the data can be utilized together with experi-ments on bilberry.
The study showed that forestry activities have an impact on the growth of blue-berries, especially in the case of intense soil preparation and felling. Any dis-turbance in the forest state, such as logging, negatively affects the incidence of bilberry. On the other hand, estimates have also been made that climate change is a greater threat to bilberry growth than any current forestry measure. Regarding the treatments of the bilberry crops, no results have yet been ob-tained due to the long growth period of bilberry.
The increasing value of natural products indicates that there is a need for in-formation handled in the study and that more commercially applicable and prac-tical guidance is needed in the future. The share of different uses of forests is increasing and the utilization of berries will play an important role in the future.
