Vanhalle ihmiselle on tärkeää omien voimavarojensa pienikin käyttäminen. Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to collect experiences of the residents of Caring House Valkealan Iltatähti concerning a good life, and, by making use of the information, to develop a new operating model for the staff. The target of Iltatähti is to support functional capacity of the residents and thus encourage them for communality and self-help. The business idea of the association is to create care and occupancy services and stimulation for elderly people and people with disabilities. Each member of the operational staff should be responsible for offering the stimulation. The expectation for the subject of this thesis was defined by the commissioner, to consider what kind of stimulation should be offered, and ways to motivate the personnel to function. Based on the commissioner´s request, this thesis focuses on considering what type of stimulation should be offered and how to motivate staff members for the activity.
The method of this functional thesis was working with the residents, which promotes association´s targets of communality and participation. The method of the study was to collect information about the experiences of living in the caring house, and quality of life, with the help of a mind map. After examining good life, the work was continued by developing methods for the personnel to use in their daily work to support the residents. The main result was the need of the personnel to serve as an initiator and a supervisor in the activities. The resident-oriented hearing, seeing and respecting the opinions of the residents came true in the development of the work. With shift planning, the activities can be included in the daily work of the personnel. Economic resources and shift planning for stimulation will determine the realization of the operational model.
People live in their own homes in the Caring House, and the everyday life should be supported as long as valuable aging and health of the person will allow. It is important for the old people to use their resources even a little. Practical everyday life and joy of life in the living environment are the indicators of the quality of life. Taking the residents´ individuality into account and hearing their hopes and meeting them as adults are indicators of the quality of care. As a conclusion, it can be said that when implemented, the operation model is the answer for the commissioner´s objective and residents´ hopes.
